I almost didn't read this. I read book 2, EverBound, before this and I hate to go backwards. Thankfully I went back. This is Cole, this is who he is inside and his inner demons shine and does something else he didn't even know he had anymore. He is so much more than written in the first two books, and so are his friends. Warning there are some extra creepy crawly parts, and torture that is horrendous.

I was hoping for something like destroy me, that really shows you the inside of a somewhat crazy male character. This one felt flat to me. It didn't bring much in terms of understanding Cole, all that was shown was already pretty obvious and also the story by itself was not very interesting. Besides the story we have Cole that is supposed to be hundreads of years old and he just felt like a flat teenager character realizing obvious stuff and not really thinking about it. I do not dislike Cole as a character and was hoping to get a better understanding of him but this just felt meh to me.

I like these books a lot. Even though I don't like Cole, I still ended up feeling bad for him. Can't wait to read Everbound!

Hmmmmm.
After finishing Everneath a year ago I was left with mixed feelings towards Cole. I wanted to despise him but I couldn't because I could tell that there was something up with him. Getting inside his head proved me right. I'm starting to notice a beginning of a trend in YA novels with love triangles. First of all, they aren't technically "love triangles" since it's pretty obvious who the heroine favors buuut, the "evil" guy is actually worthy of her affections. As I have seen in the Shatter Me, Covenant, and now Everneath series, the second guy (i.e Warner, Seth, and Cole) are made out to be the "bad guys" even though the reality IMO is that they aren't understood. These guys believe in a cause that nobody truly understands. They may be going about their cause in a less than admirable way, but I do find it admirable that they are fighting for what they believe in. They're not ones to give up even when the world is against them.
My favorite quote that I live by is "Stand up for what you believe in even if it means standing alone" and that is exactly what these characters are doing. That's probably the reason as to why I can't bring myself to hate them. So before judging Cole (or any other character that I am describing), you should try to put yourself in their shoes. That's exactly what Neverfall does. You get to see things from Cole's POV and you realize that he isn't truly a bad guy. He's misunderstood and reading Neverfall will help you understand his motivations.
