A great book that does exactly what a sequel should do: build on the themes introduced in the first book and raise the stakes. Although I was expecting the games themselves to again be the largest part of the book (and for that reason I felt that sometimes things went a little too quickly), the time spent outside the games allows Collins to expand the intricate worldbuilding and use the politics of Panem to add so much more tension to the plot. I enjoyed how Katniss’ and Peeta’s trauma from the previous book is explored in this section, as well as the victors teaming up during the games to give a different experience to the first book where Katniss is largely by herself.

I did feel, however, that there is too much time spent in Katniss’ head throughout the book. Even when there is some action, the flow of this action can be broken by Katniss recalling a memory or thinking about Peeta or her family. This would be fine in moderation, but there are only so many times Katniss can think about sacrificing herself for Peeta before her monologues start getting a little repetitive.

it does get a bit slow when in district 12, but everything else completely make up for it, and the development of katniss and peeta’s relationship is something to completely adore about this book. such a cool concept about the arena, and the ending will forever be one of the best plot twists.
