Wonderful book! I would definitely recommend it for fans of "Island of the Blue Dolphins" or "My Side of the Mountain" - a great narrative with a lot of information about how to live off the land. Highly recommend this to older middle school readers; it deals with very difficult subjects in accessible language.

Wow! I loved this book and the main character, Ellie. Her family is torn from their life in town at the onset of the Great Depression. Her father is a tailor and her mother a music teacher, but now they are recreating their life on Echo Mountain in rural Maine.

Ellie, along with her brother Samuel and her sister Esther, adapt to a life they have never known; one that requires resilience and hard work. Ellie takes to life on the mountain and learns valuable lessons from her father.

A tragic accident challenges Ellie to learn who she is and who she must be for her family.

This story focuses on Ellie and she is a great character; a girl full of moxie and grace. Her insights are clever. Wolk has created another great story about finding your voice. I loved this book as much as [b:Wolf Hollow|26026063|Wolf Hollow|Lauren Wolk|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1485977210l/26026063._SY75_.jpg|43346512].

Thanks to Penguin/Random House for the ARC.

3.5 ⭐️ Moments of greatness, with exceptional writing, but my 4th grader thought it was a bit graphic, and while it did end well, she found it too sad for almost its entirety. I enjoyed it very much as a grown-up, but I can understand for a middle grader, it might be a bit dull and depressing, and possibly a bit graphic at times.

I liked the general concept of this book and the main character of Ellie is well developed. I just felt that this might be a difficult book for kids to fully get into and stick with. I don't know. Like I said I liked it but probably wouldn't recommend it to a kid that in particular is looking for a historical fiction book.
Definitely for 6th grader and up.
