As a person of Spanish extraction currently living in Oxford, collecting books and feeling somewhat out of place, I deeply relate to this book. Charged with dry wit, Marias details an Oxford much like the real one: moments of excitement and horror punctuating long stretches of uncertainty and tedium.

this was more a character study than anything, grasping at straws for a central plot while focusing on the (relentless) inner thoughts of the narrator. clare haunts this book like a ghost and i found myself looking forward to the scenes she would be present in; in a way the writing style conditioned me to be just like the narrator. although boring at times the writing style kept me engaged. i could see myself better enjoying another book of the authors with a more refined plot.
Oxford-set, melancholy, digressive first-person account of a male lecturer, visiting from Spain, and his two-year affair with an Englishwoman. About four-fifths through I was growing impatient with its complacent privileged worldview, but shortly after, as the affair nears its end, it introduces a recollected event that is surprising and affecting.
