SPOILERS:
I enjoyed every part of the book up until the climax. Even then, I loved most of the ending? But I’m incredibly glad the movie decided to change what happened to Rose and Lorelei. It definitely feels purposeful to have punished the two Japanese girls for making choices that were meant to mirror the MC’s.
You can clearly see the author wanted to make a POINT with this. But it still didn’t rub me the right way.

This is a sort of slow slice of life type of books that I tend to really enjoy. It's sweet and simple and really a lovely read. I've loved the movie based on this book for years- somehow I stumbled across the movie years ago, watching it whenever I need a feel good type of movie, and only recently realized that there was a book behind the movie. I think I ultimately like the movie version better, probably because I saw it before reading the book, but both are equally lovely.
Pros: I loved the story of gradually unfolding love. I also enjoyed following the main character as she made peace with her past and opened her heart again. Wonderfully vivid descriptions of the main character's surroundings. A great "sense of place."
Cons: I felt the author was preachy and shoehorned her own modern beliefs into a woman from the 1940's. At least she made the character a college girl to make it more believable. I also often found the main character to be arrogant and judgmental, which was annoying to me.

I enjoyed this read generally but there were a few things that kind of ruined what could have been a much better book. The main character was so unlikable for much of the book. The whole Japanese internment camp story line just seemed weird and done in a strange way. Ray seemed like the kindest most patient soul. I couldn't understand why he loved he so much when she was so focused on just herself all the time. I can't believe I am saying this but the movie was better.
