Meredith Duran is one of my favorite authors, she has such a unique writing style that feels “old-school” but is still geared toward a modern audience. It makes her books all the more immersive because you feel like your actually in the past just based on the language the characters use.
This book had so much potential and if there would have been more focus on Adrian and Nora’s early relationship and the tension and heartbreak of them having to ignore each other in court while Nora was married to someone else. I feel like it would have easily been a 5 star book if after the initial reveal we went into a couple of chapters of what it was like from both of their perspectives in the past. Learning about that through quick flashbacks and the characters just talking about what happened was way less satisfying then seeing the characters go through it.

Not perfect, but I’m rounding up. Duran’s writing takes my breath away. Interesting time period, and I honestly feel like I learned a lot. Second chance angst up the wazoo, but a satisfying reunion and redemption arc for both MCs. I wish it had more than a glimpse of their HEA…

Complex intriguing characters but possibly Duran's most problematic book. And despite that still quite enjoyable.

This is my first book by Meredith Duran, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. There were a couple of chapters that I absolutely loved. But I found most of the book to be a little boring and I lost interest in the plot and characters. The writing style is completely different and unique. I've never read a book that was written quite this way, which might be why I didn't love it. I'm not saying that this book was bad or anything like that. I did like the book. I just had a hard time connecting to it, and found the writing style to not be what I normally read. I'll definitely try another book by this author though!

I'm running out of Meredith Duran to read! This one was very good, with a compelling plot & characters with understandable motivations.

Idk there were parts of this I liked. Esp. Before they reconciled. I don’t know if I quite buy their reconciliation

Almost perfect. Meredith Duran is a phenomenal writer, no one writes the genre like she does, shocking to believe but she makes it so realistic, yeah, I know realistic historical fiction, yep. The characters are multidimensional, the settings are believable and well researched, the language is impeccable and the story well paced. The character development is so good that I found myself wanting to reach through the book and whack a few upside the head for being so... THEM! Well it takes talent to write such flawed yet respected characters. Yes this is romance, yes its steamy sometimes, but the overall feeling of melancholy develops from page one and envelops you and takes you on a lulling ride the whole time and that's exactly how it was meant to be to tell Adrian and Nora's story.
2/2 for Duran, now to order the rest of her library :)
