I try to only give five stars to those books that really deserve it--books that I love and can't find anything in them to hate. This is one of those books.
Flavia is enchanting from the beginning. She's brilliant with a positive self-image and often made me laugh out loud. When she rhapsodizes about chemistry, she reminds me of Kip in [b:Have Space Suit-Will Travel|20417|Have Space Suit-Will Travel|Robert A. Heinlein|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1167297464s/20417.jpg|1984753] when he tries to explain the physics and mathematics behind space travel. I don't understand it even after the explanations, but I love that they're nerdy enough to try. The mystery is perfectly suited for a girl Flavia's age and her interactions with the police are fun to read. Perhaps this is how Miss Marple started.... I highly recommend this book.

Very cute book. Main character of Flavia del Luce is unforgettable and I'm hoping there are more books to come.
I read some reviews after beginning the book, and was surprised to find how popular Flavia seems to be. I didn't like her at all to begin with, but she really grew on me throughout the story. It took some interesting turns and I enjoyed the mystery. The setting and the characters are unique. I won't be running for the sequels immediately, but I will be reading them at some point.
Second time I'm trying this, officially giving up. Really uninteresting and the really unnecessary ~historically accurate~ racism just pushed me over the edge to nopetown.
The funnest, most quirky, most delightful, most surprising narrator ever. Sort of in the vein of _I Capture the Castle_. You'll love this.
This wasn’t as good as I was hoping it would be. I read it for my The 52 Book Club challenge (a book featuring an unlikely detective). Flavia is a bit too precious and annoying for me. It took me way too long to read this, which is usually an indication that a book isn’t for me. I’m not much into reading series, so I definitely won’t read another book in this series.
This just didnt grab me. I've heard great things about it and know many people have enjoyed it but it was one of those "Not For Me Books" I am not giving it a rating because I was unable to even finish listening so I feel it would be unfair to give any rating.
