Perfectly delightful!
Flavia de Luce runs amuck around her family’s estate in the English countryside performing chemistry, annoying her sisters, and occasionally solving a murder. I loved the 1950s setting; it’s a very interesting time period. I would call it a near perfect book for young and old low-stakes mystery readers.
Bradley’s writing is vivid as are his allusions! It is very entertaining to read and I would have finished it sooner had I not contracted a sickness right smack in the middle of the novel just as Flavia does.
I want to dive into another Flavia story right now!

Listen to this if you can! The reader is phenomenal and the main character is a precocious 11 year old who solves mysteries =) What more can I say? It's not as cheesy as you might be thinking. The writing is really smart and so are the characters. You won't be disappointed. And, if you like series, this is the start of one, and the reader for this audio is the same throughout! Yay!
Such a charming book! I love Flavia! She is smart and headstrong and uses it to save her father whom she desperately loves! I love how she interacts with her sisters and how she fits in in her family. I also love her detection methods and just the way she thinks! Well done, I know I will enjoy the whole series!
I like Flavia and the plot was interesting, but it was a little long and slow moving for me.

I was really looking forward to reading this as some of the bloggers I enjoy had recommended it highly. It might just be post-brexit blues,but the author paints a picture of England that exists only in the imagination (yes, I realise this is a novel, but other cosy whodunnits were written at a time when parts of what he describes still existed, and they "work", this just didn't). Also I found it hard to believe in Flavia - some of what she claimed to know didn't match with other things she didn't. There are incredibly clever children out there, but she just didn't ring true. I am very sorry about this, and I will try another in the series, but this one was disappointing.
Extremely compelling protagonist, well written, fair play mystery plot, a fun and fast read. Extended scene of blatant anti Asian racism and offensive stereotypes (period typical??) goes completely unexamined and uncritiqued
Amazon recommended this to me and I have to admit, it sounds great.
It is about an 11 year-old British girl who decides playing with her chemistry instruments isn't enough anymore and decides to try detective work. There are now 3 books based on this character. Well see how it goes. :)

Fun first novel though some details made me wonder/question the logic… Also the pace dropped now and then, losing my interest for short amounts of time. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
