Cute fun adventure. Some violence. Took me a minute to get into this book and am glad I kept with it. The grand children of Robin Hood modernize the story well.

One issue I have with grumpy x sunshine romance novels is too sunny sunshines and too grumpy grumps. Clem was endearing enough. Sometimes unreasonably sunshine-y, but okay. But I had trouble rooting for Mariel. I wasn't buying their attraction because Mariel kind of crossed the line from grouchy to unpleasant.

But, it all came around. I did eventually get on board with both of them and their relationship. But I wasn't rooting for them from the get go. Honestly, I kind of wanted Clem and Josie to get together. Oops! Shipping the wrong ship!

But, I was enchanted with the setting. Loved the corruption of the ideal of the Merry Men, and how the people inside the group struggled to see the changes. As a political allegory, this was working for me!

In the end, I enjoyed this book. Not going to make my "top ten" list, but not every novel needs to be the official greatest book ever. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to read a fantasy adventure romance set in the world of Robin Hood.

i really loved this book omg. literally everything i like in a book. the adventerous/tense and romantic/sappy/lighthearted bits were balanced really nicely. even tho i love everyone, i wish some characters had a bit more depth to them. i wish the ending were a bit longer and like there was a bit more to show everything resolving, but that’s not too big of a deal. the beginning also felt rushed to me too. clem was the absolutele best i loved reading her pov. can’t believe that
baxter dies, that broke me.
this book was a masterpiece i love nature and i love queer people and i love adventure and i love this type of medieval settings and i hate fascism so it feels like this book was written for me.

I think i prefer Gwen & Art for the banter but I enjoyed the higher stakes and action this time around!

The characters aren’t coming to life in the same way as in Gwen and Art. It causes the book to feel needlessly long. We got a lot of backstory on many of these characters, and while it impacted the characters as individuals, it didn’t seem to play a role in the plot or even their relationships. When so much time is spent exploring a character’s identity, you want to see that in their motivations, words, and actions. Instead we have a lot of black and white good guys and bad guys with the good guys being the only ones graced with a characterization beyond basic traits.

I’m also let down by the lack of fun this book seems to have. Outside of a couple side characters making comments occasionally, this book is less hijinks in the woods and more organized militia trying to prove itself. The group takes itself too seriously and instead of the story making fun of that notion or providing serious plot points that build toward a greater mission, instead it feels like a string of events that teach the characters basic moral lessons but are things the reader would already know and assume the characters would know based on previous actions by them.

I really loved Gwen and Art (it’s still the only romcom that I’ve given 5 stars) but the way the characters worked off each other to grow and change and the comedy of their interactions is not in this book at all. It ended up being a disappointing read.
