very fun and sweet! i was a bit reluctant at the beginning just because i read gwen & art earlier this year and thought it was sort of a drag, but i am incredibly glad to say that enjoyed this far better (and ironically enough, it was this book that appealed to the part of me that is still searching for that rush of joy i used to get from watching bbc merlin). this time around i was better prepared for this author's particular brand of historical inaccuracy, but i also thought it was much better incorporated to start with, and the inclusion of the more modern humour mostly worked for me this time around!
i adored this cast of characters: they were all so wonderful, and just the fitting amount of quirky for this type of story (both the dialogue and the narration were an absolute delight). clem and mariel both had nicely executed character arcs, and precisely the sort of clashing personalities and quick banter that i fall for every time. and though the book is largely a silly fun time, it did also have some really sad and emotional scenes that worked well to make the reader more invested. all in all, i enjoyed this very much! the shade of greenwood was the perfect place to hide out during this first wave of summer heat.

Through most of this book, I was entirely convinced that it was all just going to be a cozy little adventure in the woods with found family and great humor. And that is true for most of this book. And then the last hundred pages or so happened...
At least, it did end on a happy and hopeful note..
Also, Clem is just one of the best main characters ever, her humor and entire being had me grinning through (almost) the entire book.
