The first half of this book I would give 2 stars, it was slow and I really struggled to get in to it. If I hadn't had to read this for uni I probably would have given up. However, the second half would get 4 stars, so I spilt the difference. The second half is where the story really gets going and picks up the pace. Really enjoyed the second half.

This is sensational. Does anyone have a big enough stage and a big enough budget to revive it? Probably only the National again. But please, please, please, do yourself a favour: don't read the blurb. It gives away too much, which is annoying if you do that to find out simple set up about the play (you know what a blurb does). Anyway, this adaptation is a modern masterpiece of what is possible in theatre.

This book was amazing. Just amazing. It was told so vividly and really made the reader cry with all of it's loveable characters. Truly amazing.

Wow. A lot better than I expected!
Such an emotional, gripping and heart wrenching story. A real page turner with some very complex and fascinating characters. There were some twists and turns that were so great near the end, it made the book even better. It's something I've not read before and I'm pleasantly surprised! Can't say I've read anything set in the 1700's, but considering it was written in like 2000, it made it easier to understand. None of that weird Ye Olde writing that I can't work out.
Such a great and quick read! Although it states that I started reading this ages a go, I read most of it in one sitting. I shall look forward to studying this book for university next month.

Also, I'm not sure if this is truly suitable for children. Maybe like 11 onwards, it was rather dark. It has a lot of mentions of dead babies, children and child abuse which would cause a lot of distress, but it's not entirely detailed. Its just not very nice :(

I was disappointed by Coram Boy; my last encounter with it had been when it was on at The National Theatre, which was absolutely amazing and maybe I had forgotten that the novel actually isn't as good as its stage adaptation. I don't think that Jamila Gavin is a particularly spectacular writer, although her stories are good. But, rereading this, even the story seemed lacking: there were too many coincidences, even for a children's book and I ended up feeling pretty irritated. I wish I hadn't reread it, and left it as a nice memory. Sometimes childhood things are best left without revisiting.

There was nothing fundamentally bad or wrong about this book I just got bored with it and couldn't bring myself to read till the end.
