Quite different gothic fairy tale of friendship, growing up, marriage, secrets and betrayals. At times I found the story line confusing and hard to follow with all the “fairy tale” inferences.

This was a strange one. I wasn’t sure what was happening for most of the book but I had to know where it was going. The prose is beautiful but like other reviewers said sometimes I would forget if I was reading Azure or the bridegroom’s POV. I still want to see what her YA books are like after reading this one.

3.5 stars. Intriguing, and also fairly disturbing in many ways..

I didn’t like the way it was written. It kept foreshadowing in a way that was so gimmicky and annoying.

I haven't been able to stop thinking about this story. Is it strange? Absolutely. But every word held me captive. Days later, I'm still turning over the myths and mystery, hints slipped between fantasy and reality. The adult chapters are lush and lethal, and the adolescent chapters are whimsical and toxic. Can you remember the fantasy worlds from your childhood? When do we stop looking for magic around us, or do we ever really stop? How many fantasies did I create to cope with my reality? This book is an absolute trip, and I intend to visit again. All of the stars.

if it kept the same energy as the first 50 pages, I would've given this 5 stars. the exquisite prose stayed the same til the end, but the plot & characters all felt so abstract & so hard to decipher from reality vs fairytale that i felt like i was hallucinating half the time. the way everything circles back in the end is brilliant though; i can't lie. i will definitely read Chokshi's backlist because this was a ride.
