I just finished this book and wow. Searing and painful but important. It broke my heart and made me angry. I knew it was going to be a heartbreaking novel going in but it shattered it multiple times. The end with her mother made me cry. Also the Monica Lewinsky passage gave me chills.

I didn’t enjoy this book. I’ve heard such high praise about it as well, I was so excited when I found it in NYC. Too excited, clearly. I thought the main character sucked— yes, traumatic events can make you do bad things and trauma can fuck you up but you still have a choice at the end of the day. I think the nuance was thete and I wish I cared much that it was there but it seemed mostly one note, on the off occasion it wasn’t then it was incredibly short lived. This book was what I like to call a caricature of abuse, i’m sure this is someone’s story and that is okay and it’s good that it exists for whoever out there really needs it, but abused or not— I just don’t think Vanessa is a very good person. I’m sure the point of her character is to upset you and make you think but the ‘development’ feels so shoe horned in and by the end I can’t find it in me to care very much. I was more invested in Taylor.
