Loved the premise (who doesn't like an AI-takes-over-the-world dystopia?). Disliked the execution. The story fell flat; characters were one-note; and it lacked basic intrigue aside from the main premise. If the author's intention was to mold his idea into a blob (haha) regardless of content, then he succeeded at that. However, if his intention was to craft a vivid world with intriguing characters, it would seem the writing did not serve that function.

"Inwardly: alone. Here. Living under the land, under the sea, in the belly of AM, whom we created because our time was badly spent and we must have known unconsciously that he could do it better. At least the four of them are safe at last.
AM will be all the madder for that. It makes me a little happier.
And yet... AM has won, simply... he has taken his revenge...
I have no mouth. And I must scream."

i feel like with this book, the meaning is created with the interaction of the reader with the content. yes, ellison was a deeply bigoted individual and an insanely talented writer and this incredible incredible piece of writing does have misogynistic themes (consciously or unconsciously), but as a reader who was able to make meaning out of reading the content. just as much as i can argue that this book was the product of a flawed man with terrible morals who wrote of bigotry, i can't take away from the fact that the themes in this book are still astonishingly poignant and resonant. there has to be a reason I finished with glassy eyes.

This dynamic is like one of my worst fears coming to life; AI overtaking humanity/becoming hyper aware and essentially controlling us. I loved the concept of jealousy and how Am made Ted experience extreme physical pain to replicate the pain that it felt knowing it would never be human and only ever a machine.
Loads of reviews speak about the misogynistic language but, I really believe that that added to disturbing situation we were reading about. (Not that I support it)
