This novel was probably one of the most bizarre things I’ve ever encountered!
I kept forgetting to update what page I was on as I was so engrossed in the book!
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and I can really see it’s ties to nevill’s other book the ritual which happens to also be one of the better books I’ve read in the horror genre .
I would highly recommend this novel it’s incredibly creepy and shows promise to outline the more creature based tales.

I was a little disappointed by this one, but I think the problem was with me, not the book! I always love how atmospheric and gripping Nevill's books are, and this one was no exception. His descriptions of the horrific are chilling and always put you right there, which I really like in a horror story.
I think I'll try this one again later!

This is probably one of my favorite books I've read. Adam Nevill really kept me up at night, either needing to keep reading or slightly too scared to sleep.
I started reading his novels because Scott Smith had written a comment about house of small shadows and I'm glad I did.

This would’ve been more impactful if it had been about 200 pages shorter or divided into two books, and hadn’t obviously been a man trying to write a woman in peril. I just don’t get why they always think women will make stupid decisions under duress or not know when to keep our mouths shut and play dumb until the time is right to act.
This was a really intriguing premise, but it fell flat for me and was too drawn out.
Spoiler
When the MC aggressively threatened to call the cops on a man who JUST murdered another woman, and did so while in a room alone with him and not even trying to hide her cell phone (rather than demurely waiting for him to leave the room before sneakily doing so) I almost rolled my eyes right out of my head. Sigh. This was a really intriguing premise, but it fell flat for me and was too drawn out.

one of the scariest books i’ve ever read, but it didn’t need to be quite so long (i mean, over 90 chapters? really? i did read the whole thing in one day though so…)

I'm so disappointed. I saved this longer read for a nice October read. I was so excited to dive in before I watched the movie so I started and - right off the bat, I was confused. There is no way a girl who has been threatened by her landlord AND has heard midnight rape in the room next door is going to slip down to her underwear to sleep. SO many things just didn't make sense.
And THEN we get to part 2. I was just sticking with it to say I'd read to the end. I was no longer invested and was completely done with whatever was happening. It never got better and continuing to read never paid off. I just didn't enjoy this one at all. Not for me.
