Ehhhhhh. This gets 3 stars because the story itself was interesting and I didn't feel bored or restless during any point. Casey McQuiston can write a plot that'll get you invested. But omg. I did not have to google the author to know this was written by a milennial, but I did, and sure enough... it was written by a milennial. I'm sorry, but the characters were meant to be around my age and they did not feel like it, at all. They were at levels far too quirky to be gen z... find your quirkiest kweer-identified milennial and maybe some of the characters in here would still out-quirky them.

I didn't really like any of the characters, except maybe the people who work at the restaurant with August. It was clear I was meant to absolutely LOVE the #foundfamily but I didn't like any of them and I would hate to be in their friend group. Most of the characters were really obnoxious lol. Also like, why are we 60 pages from the end of the book, where all of the plot points have yet to be tied up, and we get ANOTHER play by play of a drag show. No hate to drag shows, but none of the 5 main (ish) characters were drag queens and it was not necessary to the plot at all.

I might lower my rating to 2 or 2.5 because I just feel so negatively about this book idk. Like I was invested and mostly enjoyed reading it but so much about it bugged me, especially the writing. There were moments of gorgeous writing and observations but they were almost always overwritten. Some of them needed to just be left alone. And the dialogue was very... fan-fictiony. A lot of this was fan-fictiony.

Not a bad book, I just didn't realise it had some elements I don't often enjoy

So much to say about this, let’s start with the good stuff: The. Side. Characters. They were amazing and lovable and added so much to the book, the whole found family element was to die for!! The romance was cute and unique and I liked the MC and love interest- (also to all those judging the PDA on the subway…. like you wouldn’t do the same under those circumstances). You’ll have to suspend disbelief for a lot of the plot, but you should be prepared for that after reading the blurb.

The less than ideal stuff: things just seems a liiiiittle too easy for main character. Would have liked to see a bit more struggle. Also the main plot point of the book creates a huge power imbalance between MC and love interest which was kinda uncomfortable. Main character also tells her Asian love interest that racism isn’t so bad these days

To start off.. to tell you I was SO CLOSE TO CRYING. Omg I loved this book so much McQuiston did a crazy good job at telling this story without it being or seeming predictable. The characters, even the side ones, were so interesting and I loved reading them. The only thing about this book was the long chapters, and how the first 1/3 of the book was a tab bit slow but it helped to build the characters.
