Wow, this was not an easy book to read. One night, I read it just before bed but the intensity and sadness of the story kept me awake an hour later. Immaculee Ilibagiza sounds like an an amazing woman and her story is incredible.

I found this to be a surprisingly uplifting book. There was so much I learned about faith, optimism, forgiveness, and especially prayer. This book is one of those gems that has forever changed me.

Five Stars.

This woman has amazing faith and strength. Her ability to forgive her family's killers is inspiring.

Not a fan. The woman's story is amazing but there were so many quotes from the bible that at times I felt like I was reading propaganda given to me by people knocking on my door. The foreward was crazy and should have been a good enough warning for me to put the book down. Can't believe this book got such high reviews on Goodreads.

What a life-changing story! I left this book a better person, more inspired, and more forgiving in my heart. I am completely shocked that such a genocide happened in my lifetime and I had never heard about it before. Immaculee has been added to my list of heroes, and I hope to meet her someday. This easily earns one of my rare 5-star ratings.

What a powerful tale of faith and strength. A great memoir, everyone should read this book to remind us what happens when we allow ourselves to become hateful and negative. As I am firmly a skeptical agnostic this was a bit heavy on the god stuff and I don't believe all of the miraculous happenings but a great book nonetheless. Surprisingly I found all of her prayer less annoying than I normally would.

Immacule'e Ilibagiza's story of the Rwandan genocide is a book I couldn't put down. Even the briefest descriptions of the horrors the people of Rwanda suffered broke my heart over and over again. Yet, she finds ways to forgive those who were caught-up in the political evil that surrounded her country. She describes her self-discovery through God and overcoming such awful circumstances with hope and faith. Immaculee beats terrible odds to share this story.
I'm not one to delve into stories of majestic spiritual miracles. I tend to shy away from books that are even written by religious individuals. I'm so glad that I stepped out of my comfort zone. This book is more than a story of survival; it's a story of faith and self-relization. Immaculee describes what really matters in this world.
"The love of a single heart can make a world of a difference. I believe that we can heal Rwanda--and our world--by haling one heart at a time."
Thank you, Immaculee, for sharing your story...and your faith.

I read this book for class and really liked it. It is heartbreaking to hear about what was happening in Rwanda at this time and that it wasn’t really covered by media in the US.

Super interesting book about the genocide in Rwanda (I knew nothing about this prior to reading, which is crazy!)

This is an amazing story. What makes me sad, is that I had ::no:: idea the genocide was even going on at the time it happened. I wish I could have been helping them somehow. Those poor people with such horrible things going on. Immaculee is amazing, I would ::love:: to hear her speak or better yet, meet her. She's an amazing lady, beautiful inside and out.

This book was painful for me to read, as I like flowery, light, happy stuff. But, I think everyone should read this book. It's pretty much the worst life could get - so if I ever think my life is hard, I need to remember Immaculee and her hope, faith and strong will to survive. There was amazing perspective in this book. The things that woman went through blew my mind, I honestly can't believe people could turn so animalistic and evil - it was heartbreaking. I'm very thankful Immaculee survived. The pictures in the back of the book were SO interesting. Breaks my heart at the same time. Def a tear jerker book, but SO worth reading! :) I just love how forgiving and hopeful Immaculee was and is. She's amazing.

I think I will continue to think about this book for many years to come... and Tana was right, this is a life-changing book...

This was a hard story to read, but one of great importance. It is only through our history that we prevent making the same mistakes over again.
