Personally, I tend to find graphic novels quite hard to get into but this one surprised me. The story itself turned out to be darker than I expected but that’s no bad thing. The balance of text and pictures is well managed and whilst some aspects are there for you to read with words, there are still details to be discovered through reading the pictures which is a key part of being a good graphic novel in my opinion.

Whilst Emily and Navin rescuing their mother is the main plot, I really like how their bother and sister relationship is still showcased in subtle ways. Being older, Emily’s reluctant to let him get things first or do the exciting jobs but at the same time she’d do anything to protect him. Maybe it’s the fact I’m the oldest sibling that allows me to relate to that but I still love that it’s woven into the story.

The cliffhanger leaves you suitably intrigued and leaves you wondering where the story goes next. I think that at this point Emily and Navin still don’t really understand the world that they’ve just walked into, and neither do we. Very interesting indeed.

Liked this a lot!

I'm going through what I've read of the series in order to catch up - I read partway a while ago but hadn't picked it up again since then.

The first volume is a little vague in terms of world-building (chosen one, plotting to take down a ruler, etc.) but still cute. It's strongest when it focuses on family dynamics, which are part of the core of the series.

I feel like there isn't a whole lot to say about the first volume since it plays into a few different genre tropes, but nonetheless plunges forward at the end.

I decided to see what my son's been reading of late. He's currently on #4 of this series. So I grabbed the first volume from the library and read it today. It's a very quick read with a lot of action and good art. The story-line is simple, but there are a few surprises to keep it interesting.

My son is seven, and a pretty strong reader for his age. This book kept him interested and he didn't have any trouble following it or understanding it. In fact, it kicked off his current interest in graphic novels, which has continued with this series and branched off into others.

This reminded me a little of Locke and Key, at least in the beginning, but aimed at a younger audience. It was so much fun, a little spooky and intense, and I can see why it’s so popular now. Kicking myself that I didn’t jump on the series earlier but at least now I don’t have to wait for the last book. Loving this one and so glad to finally be on the Amulet train.
