3.5 stars!

I'm sad to say I cannot join the rest of the 5 star fan club when it comes to this book. I was stuck between giving this book 3 or 4 stars but ultimately decided on 3 stars. I liked this book, it was depressing but I was expecting that from the beginning. I went into this book not knowing what to expect but at the same time a little nervous. Teacher/Student relationship books aren't my favorite kind of books to read but I've heard so many amazing things about this book that I just couldn't help but want to read it.
For the first half of the book, I was really digging this book. I loved the writing, the quotes from Romeo's Quest at the beginning of each chapter, and most importantly the meeting of Daniel and Ashlyn. It was super cute and I could feel the connection between them. But somewhere in the middle, I started losing the connection I felt.
I think my main problem was that towards the middle, I started to feel like I was being told the story rather being shown it. It just felt like "so this happened and then we went here and yeah that was the day" rather then in the beginning where I felt everything and could picture each scene clearly in my head. I felt like the second half of the book was a bit rushed and so much happens but we never really get a detailed scene on anything.
There is a certain scene that if you read the book, breaks your heart but at the same time I couldn't help but think: really? Was that necessary? I didn't even shed a tear until Daniel read the paper out loud. I felt sad but I also felt annoyed. This book is depressing enough with the death of her twin sister, we don't need added drama.
I would have liked to know what happens with the secondary characters. We aren't told much by the end. We just know the outcome of Daniel and Ashlyn and even that was, once again, rushed. What became of Hailey, Jake, Jace, and Daniel's Buddhist friend who lived with him that for some reason I can't remember his name even though I really liked him? Are they going to get their own books? I would love to read them, especially Hailey and Daniel's friend.
I can see why so many people loved this book and I cannot deny that the author has the potential to write beautiful, amazing books. I hate that I can't give this 5 stars but I wouldn't discourage anyone from picking this up and trying it out.

3.5 heartbreaking stars
I'm not sure why there was soooo much angst and death in this book. Then having another person die at 70%? Wasn't necessary. I just don't see Ashlyn's dad ignoring her and her sister for years and then taking her in after all this time and him being a high school principal? Not buying it. Also, what happened with Sarah's story.. We never really heard? There was a lot to be desired especially during the ending.. It was RUSHED x 3.. I wanted more from this book but I will say it pulled out the emotions on me! I typically don't cry during books and this one hit me hard, more than once. I was mixed about my feelings on this book.. I want to give it 3 stars but idk maybe it deserves 4.. So I'm gonna give it a solid 3.5 stars.

This book blew me away. Easily one of my new all time favorite books and I’m shocked at myself for not having read it earlier. It was heartbreaking, bittersweet, painful and sad, yet it was also full of hope, Love and life. It’s hard for me to put into words how I felt about this story. I cried long after it was over. It isn’t just a romance and for the book to come across as a teacher-student romance threw me off at first but it is so so much more than that. This book took my breath away and I’m sure it’s one that I’ll be reading again in the future. A beautiful story all around.

What a wonderfully written story!
This is only my second book by this author - but I am so in love with her writing style. Fabulous talent. Not a full 5 star for me because I found that some of the characters were hard for me to connect with - probably because I'm an old lady & they are teenagers. I did feel a wonderful sense of progress and growth throughout this entire book.
I'm so glad I finally met Mr. Daniels. Bravo!
