DNF @75% (skimmed the end)

So I was looking forward to this because it was enemies to lovers and it would have been good regardless of its predictability, however the choice of third person narrative was wrong. We are thrown into the deep end of the story where the MC already knows what is happening but is purposefully making everything vague and not explaining terms or rules or anything. I felt a huge disconnect with both MCs and the world because of it. There was very little world building. Even going back in open minded and ignoring my peeve of the disconnect didn't help—it was just boring and forced.

I just.. How does Ariana write angst and emotion so freaking well? Loved this so much.

Loved everything about this book and I'm kicking nyself that I waited so long to read it.

I loved the characters
The starcrossed lovers.
The steam
The chemistry
The angst
Everything

The only thing I was ambivalent about was the shift from hate to ILYs....a bit insta-lovey but I let it go.

Ariana Nash is certainly an awesome world builder. Onto book 2!

"Mikhail placed a soft kiss on the back of Severn’s neck. ā€œYou ruin meā€¦ā€ he whispered.
Severn grinned over his shoulder, proud to see Mikhail’s eyes glassy, pupils full from desire. ā€œI’ve only just begun.ā€

ā€œI love you. That is no lie.ā€

Trying to follow this story was like trying to make sense of a subway map in a city you’ve never been to.
While in a speeding train.
Going in the opposite direction of where you intend to go.
While wrangling a double stroller and two toddlers who just shit themselves.
Tedious, unforgiving, exhausting, and frustrating.

The story could have been great. The potential was there. Enemies to lovers, war-enders, peace-bringers. WASTED.

The world building and setting were messy - I had a nearly impossible time constructing what the world might be like in my head until more than half way through the story. Which was forgivable…

… LESS forgivable, however, was that it took me ages to even guess that Mikhail was the love interest. He was boring, described poorly, charmless, and indifferent. So robotic and emotionless that saving Severn made no sense and was incongruent with his character. Now, Severn could have been interesting and compelling, but his insanely abrupt and bizarre change of heart made him feel hallow.

The plot could have been a straight shot to the end and been plenty engaging but it veered off into endless tangents that made no impact on the story and introduced throw away characters and plot points.

The threesome? Zero reason. Made no sense to include it and then to kill Carl who might have honestly been my favorite character. I wanted more for Carl.

But seriously Severn went from hate fucking his mate (I guess?) to trying to murder him and almost succeeding to having a RANDOM AS FUCK threesome with legit randos who added nothing to the plot to vowing AGAIN to kill his mate to KISSING his mate 10 minutes later and then realizing he must actually care for Mikhail? There was no catalyst for the change just a sudden switch flipped from hate, vengeance, and spite to love? Wtf.

I am baffled.

OH AND the piracy warning was literally insane. I’ve never seen an author give away the entire plot before the story even began. It’s like getting fucked in the ass without lube (right, Severn?)

Dark and twisty

Thrilling and engaging. I really liked the world built with the authors words. I’m looking forward to the next book!

In awe of this epic battle of ā€œhavenā€ and hell. Love and hate. Angel and demon. The end left me ready to scream, cry, then throw myself into the sea. Ariana Nash has such an exciting writing style. I cannot wait to DEVOUR book 2.
