oh i am so locked in to this series. i loved the addition of helene’s perspective and i can’t wait to watch her character develop. i think the romance between laia and elias was done a lot better in this book than the first one. i’m very excited to keep reading this series! also IZZI NOOOOOOO

A wonderful sequel, very fast-paced and suspenseful and with a cast of characters that was convincing and made me feel for them. The magic was interesting, even though I would have liked a little more of it in this book. Nevertheless, it made sense to me and seemed well thought out.
I loved that Helene's perspective was included in this one and I felt for her throughout the book, although I don't think her opinions on Scholars are in any way okay.
I also started actually shipping Elias and Laia, because I think the way their relationship developed warrants romantic feelings. An Ember in the Ashes did less of a convincing job of the romance for me, so I appreciate that development.
I can't wait to read A Reaper at the Gates.
