I really loved the glimpse of other characters. The story moved too fast and was a lot of telling. It was okay.

“You have all the skills to follow in my footsteps if you choose. But a jade setter’s life is dedicated to uncelebrated work that might be undone. Every day, we give ourselves to the craft of setting jade that will give power to others. They do with it what will, and we keep none of it for ourselves.”

I was over the moon when I found out that we would be getting a novella set in the Green Bone Saga world. This follows a young man named Pulo who wasn’t able to be a green bone warrior, so now he is an apprentice for the infamous jade setter, Isin. Everything gets turned upside down when an important blade is stolen from Isin’s shop and one of his workers is the main suspect.

I really loved this. I know that it has been said that people can read this before or after the Green Bone Saga, but I recommend reading it afterwards, or at the very least, after reading Jade City. I found that one of the reasons I loved this so much was how good it felt to be back in a world that I love and see some familiar faces. This also doesn’t really go into what certain terms mean and why certain relationships are the way they are.

While seeing old faces was nice, that wasn’t the only reason I loved this. It is a true mystery and it worked so well for me. I enjoyed seeing Pulo going around the city and trying to find out who took the blade, even though he had a clear idea of who did it.

Just like in the original trilogy, Lee talks about a serious issue in this novella. This book looks at how certain people in this world, in this case it’s Abukei women, can go missing and no one cares. How only certain people in Janloon are respected and cared for, and if you don’t belong in that group, people will ignore the injustices you face.

This is such a treat for Green Bone Saga fans and I’m happy it exists.

CW for sex trafficking.
