“A man doesn't have to be unkind or unlikable to have enemies. Sometimes, it's good people who are hated for who they are.”

I'm at ease. Returning to the Gree Bone Saga universe and getting to know the young Kauls, even if only briefly, is a wonderful feeling that I will never regret 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹

I really enjoyed this prequel novella. Getting a murder mystery slice of life surrounding the man who set our fav characters jade is just genius. I would love to read more stories from every day people living in Janloon.

Rating: 4.5/5

I absolutely loved having the opportunity to return to the world of the Green Bone Saga in this novella.

Set before the events of the main trilogy, The Jade Setter Of Janloon follows Pulo, apprentice to one of the most respected jade setters in Janloon. When the priceless moon blade of Ayt Mada, the ruthless Pillar of the Mountain clan, is stolen from their shop, Pulo has only three days to track down the killer and ensure the return of the weapon.

In only a short novella, Lee manages to craft a compelling and satisfying story within the Green Bone world, complete with appearances from numerous favourite characters from the trilogy. One of the best things throughout the Green Bone Saga was Lee’s outstanding characterisation, and we see this clearly displayed here as well.

I really enjoyed this novella and it was so interesting to see this world from the perspective of someone outside the two major clans. I would definitely recommend reading this book after the main trilogy (certainly after Jade City) - as otherwise I think a lot of the appreciation for some of the characters appearances and understanding of the nuances of this world will be lost. Jade Legacy was such an emotional and perfect ending to the Green Bone Saga, but The Jade Setter Of Janloon 100% adds something more to this world and any fans of the trilogy should definitely pick this novella up.

The Jade Setter of Janloon was a quick dive back into the Green Bone Saga world. I loved how it gave me a street-level view of Janloon, focusing on characters like Pulo and Malla, who aren’t part of the Kaul-clan drama but still feel the weight of the city’s tension. The twists, betrayals, and small moments of hope reminded me why I love Fonda Lee’s storytelling.

I know this is just a novella, so I can’t expect the same level of depth as the full-length books, but overall, it’s still a solid addition for fans craving another taste of Janloon.

This was a really fun addition to the universe! I can def see myself rereading this

You'll find this novella as the dictionary entry for the word "bittersweet."

The Jade Setter of Janloon contains, in a lot of ways, the best parts from The Green Bone Saga. We get a a new perspective in this novella. Not someone from one of the big clans but rather the apprentice jade setter, Pulo Oritono. Pulo is the apprentice to Isin Nakokun, a master with over twenty years of experience working for all of the clans in Janloon. Through this perceptive, long time fans get to see a side of Janloon that we don't really get in the series. Though, we also get to see the clans in a rather familiar way. Through this blending of the new and old I would say that readers just starting out with the series could begin here. However, my personal enjoyment was only increased because I knew the references and the cameos that showed up throughout the novella. A large part of my enjoyment was from simply being back in this world with the characters I have grown so fond of. From the opening page I felt immersed in the world immediately and I doubt that would happen for new readers.

Overall, I love this series and this is an excellent addition.
