I finished this in 24 hours.

I absolutely loved The Green Bone Saga Trilogy which is why I cannot fathom why it took me so much time to get to this but nevertheless reading this novella and entering back into the world that Fonda Lee has created made me realize how City of Janloon is one of my absolute favorite settings in the fantasy genre.

The storyline itself was quite engaging here and it gave a different perspective to both the clans from a normal citizens point of view. Not to mention how I loved the cameos from the Kaul family (Hiloo !!).

I am not very big on novellas but I think this might be my second favorite novellas I have ever read with the first being 'The Exile' by Ryan Cahill.

Really recommend reading this to everyone <3

The Green Bone Saga was my hands down favorite read of 2024 and it is such a delight to be returning to that world with the prequels to close out the year. I was a little bit hesitant to read this one over Jade Shards, because it seemed pitched as a separate story in the same world rather than specifically about the characters I know and love, but it came up first in my Libby holds and I am *so* glad that it did. This story was excellent, a compact story that brushes all of the parts of Janloon that made the trilogy so captivating. When I end up re-reading this series in a few years, I will certainly be including this prequel as part of the re-read. I hope that Fonda Lee goes on to more successful series in the future, but I will eagerly devour any story she ever puts forth in this one.

Reading this was akin to greeting an old friend: having even this small peep back at the world of the Green Bone Saga made the heart…ache.

In the world of Kekon created by Fonda Lee, loyalty and power are determined by a warrior’s jade ability to use the jade he or she wears — to sense, attack, deflect.

When one jade warrior kills another, he claims the jade of the fallen. Now, who then, resets these jade pieces into wearables for the victor?

Isin Nakokun is the jade-setter of Janloon. We read this novella mostly from the perspective of his apprentice, Pulo, who’s a little impatient that Isin does not want to expand his business and take advantage of his reputation among the Mountain and No Peak clans.

Literally overnight, things come crashing down. The shop, entrusted with Mountain chief Ayt Madashi’s moon blade sent in for repair, gets burgled.

Pulo goes after Isin’s good-for-nothing nephew, even seeking help from Kaul (SIGH) Hiloshudon; Fonda Lee deftly allowing us a glimpse of his earlier life.

Great novella length story in the world of Jade and Green Bones. The narrator does a fantastic job, yet again. It was interesting to get a behind the scenes view of a jade setter in neutral territory and how the Green Bone clans interactions with them play out.
