This was such a fun read. I loved all the characters especially Zhongli Qian and Shu Yanyan.
However, if you’re looking for a romance focused novel between the main characters you won’t find it here. In fact, without spoiling anything, the story is more focused on other characters and the MC and ML seem like side characters up until the end of the novel where we finally get a glimpse of their backstory and the actual romance between the two.
That is the only reason I’m giving it 3.5 stars as I started reading it thinking it would be similar to other danmei. Still, I recommend it because the plotline is refreshing and all the characters are so well-written I was dying of laughter.
However, if you’re looking for a romance focused novel between the main characters you won’t find it here. This book, for its seemingly simple summary, is actually a little complex to explain.
One day, Wenren È, the Devil Venerable, receives a novel quite suddenly out of nowhere, describing the events of their world told through the POV of a young cultivator Baili Qingmiao— Abusive Romance: You Are The Unchanging One In My Heart.
BQM is a typical xianxia novel protagonist in this story, with a love interest whom she loves very much, even if he isn't quite as faithful to her in return. Along with that, she has a bunch of other love interests – one of whom is Wenren È – who are very sincere to her, but never have their affections returned.
Wenren È is baffled by the illogical romantic plot of the book and sets out to see how much of their world is truly happening as is written and whether or not he can change this "fate". And thus begins his quest in changing this "Abusive Romance" of the MC into a "No Romance" situation, because honestly? That girl can do better.
A really wonderful part of the story is how he continuously acknowledges that the book and their world are both very real, but can also be contradictory because the book is from a single person's POV. The world, on the other hand, is a very complex one with multiple people acting out their own lives which may or may not affect BQM.
Honestly, come for the comedic start, stay for the philosophy and character growth. Every character is just so beautifully fleshed out, everything logically explained and sorted out. You will end up liking almost every single character, even the villains, just for the way they've been written.
I wouldn't really call this a romance danmei novel, but a novel that explores romance and love and relationships in general – what they are, how they happen to be, how can they be sustained, do you even need them? It has a very complex cultivation system as well, but it's very simplistic in its writing. Completely worth reading!
This novel is just marvelous in its execution, and the translator has also done a wonderful job!

i didnt expect to love this novel as much as i did but wow!! a really nice break from (most of) the overdone danmei tropes as well as all the angst :') nu tagged this with badass protagonists and they were absolutely CORRECT. also love how multidimensional all of the side characters were, how nothing was ever just black or white when it came to the demonic cultivators vs the "righteous"; how every character felt fleshed out and not just a copy paste of every other danmei side character we've seen before. and of course the humor throughout all of this was so chefs kiss. will definitely be reading this again ♡♡ only downside is its too short!!!!!!
