Lacked anything of merit really. Not the Clive Barker that I remember. At times funny, at times sad. There wasn't much to be looked back at with fondness. It was just another story that got washed out.

dark funny mysterious medium-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? No
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? It's complicated
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

I stopped reading this a quarter way in. Sorry, Clive, I love you, but my tolerance for graphic violence has plummeted since I became a mother. Cliched, but viscerally true. Why are you writing this instead of the third Abarat, anyhow?

This kind of rambled on quite a bit. The ‘burn this book’ got old, fast. That being said, the demon’s stories did keep my turning the pages, but I ended up skimming the last 15% or so

This book definitely wasn't for me. The whole thing is a gimmick that gets tiresome after only a few pages but goes on and on and on and on until long after the point where it should have ended. I usually don't finish reading (and so don't rate) books I think I'd give less than three stars, but I kept hoping this one would get better. Unfortunately, it didn't. Although I usually love Barker's work, I don't recommend this one.

I kept reading it only because intrigued to see where the story was going. The beginning is extremely captivating and then you realize that thats the best part...you keep waiting for more...and its just gruesome kill after gruesome kill.

Really not as bad as most reviews let on. I found it pretty entertaining

At first, I figured this to be Clive Barker for kids, but it got darker, and I deemed the majority more like Barker-Lite. Exactly what I needed after a couple of flop books, beating the path for a couple more of his books added to my list this year.
