This was such a slog, not to mention super cheesey / cliched, etc. Should have DNF... anyway, way too much profanity and had to skip an explicit sex scene. Not reading this author again.

3.5, but I'm going to roll it up to 4 because I really did like the characters, but the plotting here is slooowwwwww, and not in the good slow burn kind of way. The mystery surrounding the person in Pet's photograph was interesting, but while it did a lot for Pet as a character and was kind of sweet, it didn't do much for the "Matthias and Pet as a couple" fake-dating plot. The "why is the one Duchess stealing Palace bric-a-brac an open secret" side plot didn't really have a resolution - it would have really been fun to have Pet and Matthias following that character around and maybe even help her out.

Now, when Pet and Matthias did actually push the fake-dating-to-real-dating plot forward, it was amazingly good. Them getting stuck together in the closet after Operation Put the Foul-Mouthed Parrot back was a fantastic scene where they just have to talk to each other and it reveals so much about each of them.

(Although I did have to put this book under the "Sex Scene Logistics (?)" category of the HB Reading Embrace because
he's holding her up in the air against a wall/door while going down on her (???) and that is some serious Ye Olde Schoole Romance Novele shit there and I don't care how massive this dude is, Pet is an actual adult human woman and I didn't buy that part
)
