Too long. This book is in 4 parts. Peace, War, Revolution and Civil War. It follows a bunch of sorta gross horny people who live in the Don valley (pretty much Ukraine). Starts pre WWI. People are in villages having affairs and arguing and eating carp. Then WWI. These guys have to fight in it but aren't super invested in it. Then the bolsheviks seize power and some of these Don folk are on their side and others side with the Whites. Brother ends up having to kill brother and it's sad. The end.

Equal parts beautiful and soul crushing. A novel of World War I, the Russian Revolution, and the Civil War. Well worth the length. Instead of a Tolstoyian focus on the elite or a Doestoyevsky focus on the petite bourgeois, you get the crushing realism of an agrarian Cossack family and their sprawling set of acquaintances during probably the most jarring and tumultuous events of the last 500 years. Presents a frame for how a man can live through insane events, what matters in life, and the will to persevere even after all your loved ones can be killed. A novel where tbe characters truly grow, where you can understand the mental model of the protagonists, and where sentimentality and nihilism somehow coexist. Find a copy (it's hard to do) and invest the time and effort into it.

And Quiet Flows the Don /
Mikhail Sholokov
.
Definitely a heavy one. For those of you looking for uplifting quarantine reads, this is NOT it, but I am glad to have read it. There is much talk about this book. It won Sholokov the Nobel, some compare it to War and Peace, some contest the authorship, but however one may feel, it’s pretty epic (as the kids say).
.
It describes the life of the Don Cossacks during peacetime and then during WWI and the Russian Revolution and Civil War. The author gives windows into the worlds of his characters, and rather than focusing on a particular “main character,” opts for more of a quilt-like approach, introducing fragments that give rise to a view of the whole.
.
There is much discussion of the competing ideologies of the time, and the people whose lives are shaped by them. It’s a compelling, sad, and quite violent read. There a certain lack of sentimentality with which the story is told. Unlike many novels, the author is more interested giving the facts of the story and letting the reader gather their own impressions, rather than wading into the territory of the more emotional realm. Really glad to have finally experienced this one.
