The Idiot

Fyodor Dostoevsky

4.04 AVERAGE

The Idiot is a novel about Jesus-incarnate Prince Myshkin and his ventures through the evil and greedy provinces of Russia. This book is clever, albeit dull during certain parts, and includes some of the most realistic dialogue and thought-provoking moral dilemmas of any of the books I’ve read so far. Though I pledge that this book has very realistic and intriguing dialogue, I will admit sometimes there are tangents that go on for way too long, yet the symbolism of this novel redeem its few flaws. The novel also gives great insight on the human condition, religion, morality, and psychology.

This started good and promising, but later got boring and absurd. I guess that all of this was Dostoevsky's point after all, because a really big part of the book is written very theatrically, but for me absurdly boring and repetitive. You have to feel a bit like an "idiot" after reading this.

Slow burn, had to fight the translation a bit but the characters and dialogue did indeed shine through. What a tragic story! What a beautiful look into the nature of the good and evil, of culture and aristocracy, of love and what drives it. I may have to look for another translation to get a different perspective.

One of the biggest surprises of my year in 2024 was just how quickly Dostoevsky became one of my favorite authors.
