Lenny is eleven, and her seven year old brother, Davey, won’t stop growing. They live with their mother, made of mostly worries, and spend time with Mrs Gaspar, who is Hungarian and tells them her dreams. This is a story of the love of family and friends, loving a sibling who is different, the joy of kindness, and the magic and wonder in an ordinary life. It is sad, but uplifting, and life affirming. It is great for younger kids, but really, for all ages.

I love encyclopedias and the specificity of a particular 1970s childhood experience of building/updating an encyclopedia - an experience I happen to have shared. I otherwise didn't really connect with these characters though so this wasn't my favourite read.

TW: Grief, Sexual Assault, Loss

This book. It captivated me from the very beginning. This story needs to be read by everyone. I did not know how much this book would mean/impact me. I related really hard to Lenny and even though this is a middle grade book it is beyond impactful. I just. I can't even describe what this book means to me. Just thank you Karen.

I’m not usually a demanding person, today I’m going to be. I’m demanding you all get this book and read it. Now! It might be junior fiction but this is one of the most beautifully written, moving book I’ve ever encountered. Every character felt like family, I truly loved them. But Lenny and Davey especially, their sibling relationship was complex and extraordinary. I wept at the ending, it was perfection though heartbreaking. #ozfiction
