This made me think of a YA House of Leaves. The way Kurtagich plays with the typography. The idea of the house or the area around the house physically changing. The general creepy atmosphere.

That’s as far as the comparison goes, however. I thought it began strong, got very slow and repetitive in the middle, and ended suitably. It has a lot of flaws but I appreciate that Kurtagich took a chance, playing with her POVs and storytelling devices. It’s a weird book, and like House of Leaves, I imagine it will be divisive.

I will personally fight anyone who complains about it being predictable, as if cliches were not a thing because they just work well

SILLA DANIELS’S GUIDE TO LOSING YOUR MIND
1.  Notice things.
2.  Notice the things that no one else does.
3.  Notice everything. Too much. All the time.
4.  Sense the wrongness in things.
5.  But don’t feel them.
6.  Feel alone.
7.  But never be alone.

I really enjoyed this book! It creeped me out at some parts especially while reading it at night and I loved the ending. I didn't expect it at all.

I don't even know where to start with this.

THIS WAS SOME GODDAMN BULLSHIT AND I AM UPSET

This book. THIS FUCKING BOOK.

IT WAS SO GOOD. SO ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL AND GENUINELY TERRIFYING. This book had me so worked up, I've been a jumpy mess for the last two weeks that I've been reading it. IT WAS SO WELL WRITTEN. IT WAS SCARY. I LOVED THE CHARACTERS. THE PLOT WAS CONFUSING IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE. IT WAS EVERYTHING I WANTED IN A HORROR NOVEL.

U N T I L

EVERYTHING
WENT
TO
S H I T

ABSOLUTE AND UTTER BULLSHIT.

I fucking loved this book up until the 80% mark. I will give credit where credit is due; And The Trees Crept In was wonderful at first. The majority of the book was fantastic, like could have been one of my favourite books kind of fantastic. BUT THEN. THE
SpoilerFUCKING SEX SCENE IN THE WOODS
HAPPENED. THIS IS WHERE IT STARTED TO GO DOWNHILL.

Before that happened, this was without a doubt a five star book. Afterwards, I was only going to drop it to four stars. Because as stupid as it was, it is YA so I had to forgive it at least a little bit. BUT THEN IT GOT WORSE. IT WAS JUST A DOWNHILL FUCKING SPIRAL AFTER THAT.

THE ENDING????? ARE YOU KIDDING ME. ARE YOU FUCKING JOKING DAWN KURTAGICH?? ALL OF THE HORRIFYING SHIT HAPPENING IN THIS GOD FORSAKEN NOVEL WAS HAPPENING BECAUSE OF THAT???????????? ALL SILLA HAD TO DO WAS
FORGIVE HERSELF
AND THAT WOULD SOLVE EVERYTHING????? HONESTLY. THAT IS THE STUPIDEST THING YOU COULD HAVE POSSIBLY THOUGHT OF, AND IS THE REASON THAT THIS BOOK WENT FROM FIVE FUCKING STARS TO T W O.

THE FUCK KIND OF BULLSHIT

THIS BOOK WAS A WASTE OF MY TIME. WHICH IS REALLY UPSETTING BECAUSE I REALLY REALLY LIKED MOST OF IT. BUT THE FUCKING ENDING COMPLETELY RUINED IT. THE LAST TWENTY PERCENT. KURATAGICH WROTE ABSOLUTE PERFECTION FOR 80 GODDAMN PERCENT AND THEN SHE HAD TO GO AND FUCK IT UP WITH BAD YA TROPES AND BAD WRITING AND BAD STORYTELLING AND BAD CHEESY STUPID FUCKING EVERYTHING OH MY GOD I'M SO ANGRY AT HOW MUCH TIME I JUST WASTED.

Um-
What-
I-

I do not know what just happened, help.

I really enjoyed the format of this book. The way words were written as if they were spiralling, words dotted all over the page or made ten times bigger than the original font. It made it such a fun but eerie experience and really kept me engaged, and meant i could finish this so quickly. There were also little diary entries and scripts from the past.

Our main character, Silla, slowly turns delusional and things get quite messed up, which gives us the unrealiable narration. This makes it impossible to figure out what is going on, and with the fast pacing of the story, the formatting, and the way Silla seems to be losing her mind and losing control of her emotions and thoughts, makes this such a rollercoaster ride. Chapters are repeated with some slight differences which adds to the unreliable narration. It is creepy and eerie and so bizzare. The ending really got me, i had no idea it was coming and i was so confused and so baffled. It also made me tear up and feel so sad and empty oh my lord.

Overall, it was a wild ride and i don't know how to feel...
dark emotional mysterious reflective sad tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

While I may normally read this genre, there have been times I can appreciate other books in this genre but I couldn't with this one. The format was too disjointed and took me out of the story more times than necessary. The characters were not developed well enough and the ending wasn't all that worth it.

While this book definitely nailed it in the creepy atmosphere department, almost everything else about if fell flat for me.

The style of writing here is not my cup of tea, and that ending..ugh.

Usually I tend to shy away from horror books but this book caught my attention with its premise: two girls escape from their abusive household and decide to go live with their aunt in her manor. A blood manor surrounded by a dark and ominous wood.

Okay count me in! And because I wanted to have the full experience why not listen to the audiobook right? That decision was one of the best I've made and the audiobook contributed greatly to my enjoyment of this book.

But what is this book about?

Silla and her little sister Nori arrive at La Baume, their aunt's manor after escaping from their violent and abusive father. At the beginning it seems like the two girls have found a little piece of heaven and could be happy there but things began to change one night when Cath, their aunt, urges them to "stay away from the woods " and that "He will never let them go". After that sinister warning, things took a turn for the worst and the nightmare began for Silla.

I don't want to spoil anything and I really think that it's best to go into the story without knowing much. Some parts will certainly surprise you and others will disgust you and creep you out! I mean I don't live near woods and I was totally crept out! It was partly due to the audiobook I have to admit.
The narrator was good but the sound effects were phenomenal and listening to it was like living the story through Silla and Nori's eyes. The creepy music, the background whispering and the change between the characters' point of view were really well done and it gave me chills.

I think that if I had just read the book, my rating would have been lower but yeah the great performance of the audiobook really took the story higher.

If you want a story that will creep you out I would totally recommend this book and to have the full experience definitely check the audiobook!
