J.G. Ballard

I'm guessing on the year, but I believe I read this a year or two after the movie adaptation with James Spader and Holly Hunter came out (not to be confused with the unrelated 2004 movie of the same name). The movie is trippy and worth a watch, but the book definitely goes deeper and even darker. Disturbing and indelible.

moving and perverse, one because of the other, although I’m not sure in what order. ballard has written characters so subsumed in modern horror that their perversions become, through the near sacramental repetition of terms (‘binnacle’, ‘vulva’, ‘mucus’), hopelessly banal. and I mean hopeless: there is nothing left for these phantoms beyond the blasphemous marriage of hyper-modern pain and primal pleasure. there is nothing left in the world but cars and drivers, expressways and parking lots, embankments and driveways, the endless paved environs of our increasingly violent world, void of nature, void of humanity.

I feel like this is a hard book to deal with if you're not into cars.

I really wanted to like this book because I'm a huge psychological fiction fan, and that's what I was expecting. But honestly I was really bored with it. Maybe it's because I listened to the audiobook, but i was horribly bored with the story.

unironically and genuinely romantic in a way which pleasantly surprised me... going to tattoo the moniker "nightmare angel of the expressway" on my body permanently i think
