intrepidheroine's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 50%

I got about halfway through and can already tell there is going to be a bunch of Lying To The Heroine For Her Own Good, which is one of my least favorite tropes. I was enjoying it until then but I just lost steam here.

DNF
The characters in this are meant to be 100-200 years old so why are they talking and acting like teenagers?
The dialogue was cringy and the writing wasn’t for me. The romance was also not to my liking.

I need to come back and express my thoughts better but this book is almost like a book and a sequel mashed together

We have a huge conflict and resolution at the 50% mark and then another one at the actual end of the story - not sure how I feel about the pacing

I also felt like I was dropped in to the middle of the world and expected to know things about the world already? A bit more world building would have been good

This book has its ups and downs and there were some aspects I really loved and some I didn’t like much.

I liked Luc and Elle in general. They had such beautiful chemistry and the smut scenes were fantastic. Honestly all their scenes together were beautiful. I loved the way they handled each other’s feelings and pasts. Definitely the highlight of the book.

On the other hand, the overall plot was weird. We get a very early climactic scene (about halfway through) and then the rest of the book feels like a long-winded conclusion. I feel like that scene needed to be moved closer to the end because for most of the second half, the book felt really slow and simple. While there was a small conflict, it didn’t feel as impressive as the one already resolved.

Still, it was a book I mostly liked and I think a 3.5 is a good fit.

🌶: Chapter 11 & 18

I enjoyed this book very much. I love the relationship between Elle and Luc. Romance is the book's centre, but I wish there were more closure to some of the plot threads opened.

I wanted to love this and enjoy it so much. The idea behind it is so unique but the execution fell flat for me. Right from the start there was lack of background and information. The world building was practically non-existent in my eyes. I was fairly confused and just felt disappointed and disconnected from these characters. Elle is an immortal adult who does not give off those vibes at all. I felt like I was reading about a teenager. It was one thing that kept me from being immersed into the story, along with the jumbled and disjointed world building.

Wonderful idea, just poor execution. Thank you so much to netgalley and the publishers for an arc copy in exchange for an honest review.
