I didn't know what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised. A surreal and poignant story about what it means to be Black in America. We follow our protagonist Claude as he struggles to find his place in the world, from South Shore Chicago, to Missouri and beyond. It's part love story, part rumination on friendship and family. The writing is minimalist at times, yet still gut wrenching and funny in places. I really, really enjoyed this book.

Really liked this. Well developed characters that I could care about, laugh out loud funny/real dialogue that didn't overwhelm the seriousness of the subject matter. Took us into South Shore Chicago, race riots/police brutality issues, poverty and hopelessness. Clear-eyed without overwhelming the reader with despair. The characters become familiar like family and you root for them. I devoured this book.
