I think the obvious parallel here is to Firefly because that is the platonic ideal of a ragtag starship crew from diverse backgrounds fighting against the odds... but I think this book has just enough DNA from a lot of different places (that aren't, say, network television) that makes it feel fresh. And even though it's one action set-piece after another, they all have enough thought put into them that it still made me eager to read.

It doesn't happen often anymore that I pick up a book that instantly grabs me. A book that makes me simultaneous wish it ends quickly so I know what happens, and wish it NEVER ends because it's just so good.

After I finished reading A Big Ship At The Edhe Of The Universe (The first title in Alex White's the Salvagers series) a while back, I was itching to read A Bad Deal For The Whole Galaxy. But I was also hesitant, because the first book was already So. Good. Space rebel underdogs that can do magic and are trying to kill a God even though all the odds are against them? Sprinkled with a delightful dose of queer relationships that do not come across as forced or unnatural? And kick ass women in the main roles? Sign me up! But I was a bit worried that this second book would not be able to live up to my expectations.

But man, did White deliver! Fast paced, action packed and still filled with all the good things that the first book already had to offer. But better. Smoother. Every scene had been written in such a way and such natural little details, that it played out for me like a movie. Dialogue was funny, but never over the top or unbelievable.

This has easily been one of the best books I've read in the past two years and I cannot recommend it and its predecessor enough.

More fun with heists and undercover work. Lots of exotic space settings. Solid book 2 with excellent pacing. Only concern is that there might be too much left for book 3.

Truly loving this series! The characters are fantastic, the plot is fast paced, and it makes me want to read all the space operas

Another fantastic read. I can't get enough of the Capricious crew and their hijinks. So ready for book 3!

I love this series with my whole heart. Everything is crazy and fucked up but I'd still like to live inside these books. This is the type of book that made me feel so many things and care so deeply about all the characters that I had no idea what to do when I finished reading...so I just hugged the book and told it thank you. Thank you for existing.

This one was a 4.5 for me!
A big thank you to Paola from Orbit for sending me a copy to read and review!
*All opinions are my own.*

I really enjoyed this continuation, almost as much as I enjoyed A Big Ship!
We get to see a bit more from all of our favorite characters, and we get to watch their friendships and relationships grow, even through the harder stuff.
Alex White knows how to write a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat! They write incredibly entertaining stories that I could easily see as movies to binge watch!

If anything, this one felt more action packed than the first one, if that’s possible.

We start out right where book one ended, and if you haven’t read book one, go read 1&2 and then come back and read this review!

It flowed seamlessly from the beginning, where the crew is aiming to take out a new “big bad” Vraba, and they go to persuade Boots to help them on one final job to take him down.

The reason I gave this one a 4.5 instead of a 5 is that sometimes the action felt like a bit much. I loved seeing how everyone’s friendships grew, and the character development as well, but I also really really enjoy slower parts and found that this book had a few less of these than the first one.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a fast paced book set in space that has some wonderful LGBT+ rep as well as a female-female relationship. Be forewarned that there is some language and a lot of gore.
