With a title like this, I bought before I even thought about it. I like the book cover, too. And the main character is so different. Robin is the librarian-wannabee. She loves books. She is small and unremarkable. She also constantly pushes up her glasses...been there! And she reads self-help novels to try and get a backbone when talking to her uncle. With all the smart-alec, almost independent women, it is refreshing to follow someone who is the complete opposite.

Robin has a problem: her mother and father died, and her inheritance is completely controlled by her uncle. She has seen $0 of it, and is missing a tome handed down generation-to-generation. Robin suspects her uncle has it, and she is willing to even visit the library in the basement to search for it. But there is a summoning circle with a demon down there. So how does she deal with it? Cookies. Yep, you gotta read further to understand, but I laughed over and over again, disturbing my husband's tv watching.

I love a great mix of comedy, action, and romance, and this is as good as A&E Kirk's Demon novels. This demon, however, is better. Better in that it matches what Kim Harrison did for her demon: he does not understand human morality; but he has his own. He interprets things his way. He uses deals in order to interact with humans. I have been searching for a novel like this!

I cannot wait to see if there is a romance, but this is probably the best of this universe so far. You don't have to read the prior series, since I couldn't remember it. You will love it.

I tried to rescue this book from my DNF list, but I ended up abandoning it again in chapter six, just like last time.

The writing is too simplistic, and I can’t picture the protagonist as a twenty-year-old. She feels more like a sixteen-year-old, and the same goes for her cousins. The story has her grieving her parents and living with her uncle, but I found it hard to relate because, by twenty, I had already graduated, was working, and living on my own. It gives off Percy Jackson and Harry Potter vibes.

While some readers describe the protagonist as shy, she comes across as more naive and foolish to me. For example,
she goes into a forbidden room just to read books, brings in a plate of cookies, and drops them on her way out. One cookie rolls away to a demon, and her response is to throw the entire plate because of that one missing cookie.

The heroine, Robin, is everything I dislike in a main character. She’s utterly helpless, spineless, and quick to cry. At twenty years old, she has lived a sheltered life, made worse by the death of her parents six months earlier. She’s uneducated in using magic and was warned against it by her parents. To make matters worse, her uncle has outwitted her out of her legal inheritance and her mother’s Grimoire. Robin’s extended family is like something out of Cinderella—they mentally and physically abuse her.

This book is a fast, easy read and honestly I just love it for the character dynamics, the urban fantasy vibe, etc etc. This was a reread for me and one where I thought I’d just read the first page and then accidentally read the whole thing in 24 hours and I’m headed straight for the next book.

Great Read

This was an interesting read. This is the first book of The Guild Codex: Demonized series. It is part of the urban fantasy series The Guild Codex, but it can be read as a standalone series. In this book, we meet fellow book lover, Robin, who moves in with her uncle after the death of her parents. She discovers that her uncle summons demons to crooked people, and in the process, befriends a demon named Zylas. I thought the story was good. I thought the interactions between Robin and Zylas were great. I thought that they were great characters and complemented each other very well. The story was short. I do wish it could have been longer, but I thought it was a great start to this series. I thought the ending was intriguing. I wonder how book 2 will turn out. Overall, a great read.

Wow, I might like this spin-off more than the original??? But I love both so much.
