Is there meaning or is meaning relative and nothing means anything? All through this book I was considering this and what this book was trying to get across, then I realized I was looking for the meaning and I can't actually do that because meaning is relative and maybe there wasn't one.

A nihilistic book for the young adult crowd, lovely. I wasn't aware of its target audience before reading it but I was fairly shocked considering its content. Its not explicit as such, but the themes it investigates are maybe a bit strong for the younger crowd; but apparently kids are already reading this in school? I hope it doesn't traumatise them.

Written in a 'Minimalist' writing style, this sort of perspective is difficult to do correctly in my view but its done well here. Its good at showing the detachment the narrator feels at the events that occur in the book.
I actually found the story to be more disturbing than many of the supposed 'most disturbing' books like American Psycho or The Room. I think it was because it hit on a very human theme and most of the events described I could see actually occurring in real life. I think most horror and psychological thriller books (at least the ones I've read) still rely on a fantasy or dream element that takes me out of the setting of the books but this was for the most part very 'grounded' so it managed to have an emotional impact on me.

Unfortunately... there is major drawback to this book and it becomes blatant once you take a step back and take a critical look at everything that happens.

-Why isn't Pierre-Anthon, the boy in the tree, at school? Where are this parents?
-Why does no one actually challenge him? Why are they all so strongly and equally affected by his words?
-Why is there a sudden escalation to everything that happens? Its so contrived
-How has no one noticed this group disappearing at the same time, to the same location for months?
-Why has no one noticed mood changes of everyone in the group? Are their parents and teachers blind?
etc.

The narrative then begins to completely fall apart. As another complaint, the last third of the book began to go in a certain direction leading to an obvious conclusion. Despite my hopes that it would turn it instead ended exactly as I was expecting it to, which is a shame.

One of my favourite books of all times. Read it when I was around 14 and I'm 22 and it still chills my bones.

Un libro que aparte del significado de la vida explora lo retorcido que somos los seres humanos.
