If you take the book as a piece of its time, written in the 1950s, with language and ideals to match the era, this is a charming book. I found myself enthralled in the story of Jean, particularly her time as a prisoner of war. Her character and relationship with Joe was striking and lovely to read, when taken in the context of the 50s. I liked the pacing and the narrator, and I wonder just how reflective of the author’s own view of his “Jean” it is.
