I liked this book more than I expected to. Jean Paget is quite a spitfire of a woman. The romance angle was a little too hokey, and I had a hard time with the obvious racism and misogyny, although it was likely very accurate for the time and place it depicted.

SO GOOD OMFG i love this book so much i spent a couple weeks on the first 10 pages but once i got out of my slump it went so fast !!!! such a good story
it gets pulled down to a 4.9 because it was released in 1950 and there’s casual racism and sexism that annoyed me but that’s unfortunately the deal with non contemporary books

The first two thirds are pretty brilliant, but the last third runs out of steam very quickly
medium-paced
The first 2/3 of this book was completely amazing. Jean is one badass lady, and I want to be as adaptive and gritty and hardworking as she is.
The last third was a little more boring for me. Once she gets to the outback the story starts slowing down. I really love the journey Jean's character takes throughout the book, though, and her achievement in getting the town to flourish. Seriously, one of THE coolest and strongest characters I've ever read. Loved her.

I love this book, so much to think about and great storytelling.
