My Year of Rest and Relaxation is about a young white woman so depressed and uninterested in life she decides to drug herself into sleeping through the year, hoping she will be renewed. I thought I would love this because I love sleep and this was lauded as an “it girl” book, but I don’t. I did like it at the beginning, but it did get repetitive. I guess that adds to the atmosphere of delirium.
I did find the main character funny mostly because she keeps commenting on how beautiful and thin she is all throughout the book. At her worst, she looked in the mirror and described herself as a gorgeous corpse. Her lookalikes were Kate Moss, Kim Novak, and Sharon Stone. Okay girl.
The ending didn’t feel all that hopeful either. I didn’t feel her sense of renewal, I found her growth shallow. This wasn’t for me and I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone except bored and emotionally stunted white women.
