[1847] I read along in the text while I listened to Juliet Stevenson narrate the audiobook, about as perfect as a reading experience can be. Took place in the late 1700s but felt timeless. The story was not at all what I expected. Catherine and Heathcliff are not a love story. It’s maybe more like when something goes beyond love and comes out ugly on the other side. Atmospheric; dark, bleak, brooding, violent. I was fully immersed in those wild Yorkshire moors in Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange with the Earnshaws and the Lintons for all three hundred and sixty pages; the rest of the world didn’t exist in the novel or for me. I do see how the brutality can turn people off but that was the intended world and I was all in. All in.

I really struggled my way through this one, just couldn’t really get into it despite how entertained I was by Heathcliff’s derangement and Cathy’s dramatics… too much incest for my taste
