It was okay.
It honestly started strong, but fell apart after about the second/third story in my opinion.
Not particularly interested in this type of storytelling.

The Ten Loves of Mr Nishino adopts a non-linear, short story style approach to piecing together the life of a troubled, complicated and at times morally abhorrent man.
The information we are able to piece together about Nishino is fragmentary and comes from the recollections of ten different women he once loved. What this means is that we only ever get glimpses of the version of the man which he allowed that lover to see.
It’s an interesting concept for a character study, but by the end I felt that the short story approach served as a disservice, particularly when incredibly complicated matters are presented without satisfying resolution.
It was a brisk and easy read, but isn’t as satisfying as Hiromi Kawakami’s other novel, Strange Weather in Tokyo.

Kawakami always has an ethereal manner of speech in her prose, and this novel was no exception. Told in the perspective of Nishino's ten loves, we build an image of a man who is honestly dislikeable - and it's no wonder his string of relationships always ends up sour. Though I particularly like that the women are the more robust entities of this novel, certainly a turn from other novels where women are seen as an abstract enigma and the voice is solely centered on the male main characters, but I digress.
An easy read, and as a fan of character studies, I did enjoy piecing together Nishino from the perspectives of a diverse set of women. It is perhaps best enjoyed if one imagines them all gathered for a sleepover and collectively dunking on this man.

loved it chewed it slayed it - the woman at the cutest book store in the world said i would love it and SHE WAS RIGHT!!! i was expecting a bit more self reflection bits as jlit usually makes me want to think about myself more than the actual character’s lives but sooo many pretty quotes and sweet and sad stories i can’t wait to read people from my neighborhood and NEEEEDDD to read the nanako thrift shop soon
