Fascinating, multi-perspective narrative, helping the reader piece together Mr Nishino like a puzzle. A calming, breezy, perfect weekend read.
I enjoyed this surreal collection of recollections on Nishino and his love life. What a player! I found it funnier than I expected. A great evocative short read.

I have no idea what I read… I love the premise of ten women explaining their complicated relationships with the same man to piece together who he was but I don’t understand why he was how he was. All the women had their own complicated lives and thoughts which I liked.
He was in love with his sister !?! He sucked his sisters tit !?!
Maybe the whole time he was just trying to fill the void his sister left? What was love to him? Idk.

Moderate: Incest
One word: enchanting. One man’s life told through the women he loved. It flows beautifully. A gorgeous book if you’re looking for something light and airy.

this was lovely and atmospheric just like hiromi kawakami’s other novel that i’ve read—strange weather in tokyo—yet it lacked a certain charm due to its central character, nishino yukihiko. i found his motivations for being the way he was unconvincing and lame, but i appreciated the depth and strength kawakami lends to her female narrators in their approaches to their relationships with him. what i love about kawakami’s writing style is that it is both straightforward and mystifying, even when the content itself is not necessarily the most engaging. while i can’t say i disliked this novel—in fact, i even enjoyed it—i feel that it would be a disservice to other novels i’ve read if i bumped the rating any higher.

“He had underestimated me. All along. Even though I had not underestimated him. But, how do you love someone without blinding yourself? Don’t we all have to indulge each other, let our guard down, and -ever so slightly- lower ourselves, in order to love someone?”
