I found Jay Crownover a long time ago but have really gotten into her writing and fell in love with her storytelling and world building. I am sad I waited so long to read this duet series. The characters and storyline were just so sweet. The trope of fake boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife may be used so often, but this was different than the others because Jay put her own spin on it, and I fell in love with it. And I think you will too!
What would you do for some fast cash? Would you take money from a girl to be her date to a wedding to get her parents off her back? Meet Langley Vaughn, desperate and dateless and Iker Alvarez needing quick cash. I know, I know, this sounds shallow, but what if I told you, it was for a good reason? Hear me out, he needs money to get his little brother into college. I know, sweet right? Well, Langley is just that girl, with a rich family and a desperate motive to convince her family she isn't single and pathetic. Oh, and did I mention that Iker was a soldier, yep; sweet and sexy, who wouldn’t fake date Iker? Iker really was just in this arrangement for the money, until he wasn’t and realized that there was more to this rich girl than originally thought. He wants to be the one to keep her safe but doesn’t feel like he is right for the job, because of the secrets he keeps. But he still wants to try. Come fall in love with this sweet little story like I did!

This is a great start to this duet. Iker and langley are good characters
Langley walks into a bar in an area that is not her norm in an attempt to find a man to be her date to her step-sisters wedding. To her first love. Awkward. She wants to find a guy that will ruffle some feathers since no one seems to give a damn about her feelings. She meets Iker who agrees to be her date for the week because he needs the money that Langley is offering to pay for his younger brother's college tuition. What is the harm? He is being deployed at the end of their paid week together and he will never see her again. Hang out with a beautiful girl for a week all expenses paid plus $10K for his brother's education. Win win. Neither one of them expected to fall for the other. But did they.
I adored how Xavier fought for Langley and made everyone who tried to put her down feel like they were inches tall. Even if he was the tattooed Army dude from the wrong side of the tracks. It was amazing to see her have someone in her corner when all her life she had no one. Not even her dad, the only real family she had left. I adored how Xavier made her realize that she was worth fighting for. That she was worth standing up for herself. I adored how Langley didn't care which side of the tracks Iker came from. Sure she hired him because of that but she ended up seeing past all of that and seeing him and falling for him and be damned if anyone said anything negative about him. Despite only knowing each other for a week and being complete opposites they were complete perfects that met at the wrong time. Xavier had to leave for his next tour and let's just say major cliffy happens here. I hate them but was lucky enough to find this book once the duet was complete. I adored Xavier and Langley and cannot wait to see how their story unfolds. Highly recommend this one but I will always say the ending makes or breaks it for me, so here is to hoping the ending holds up.

I love this one.
I loved both the Hero and heroine.
The Hero esp was amazing.
I loved the angst and bitchy comments between the heroine and her step sister and step mother.
No intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine.
No sexual history other than her ex is marrying her step sister.
Cliffhanger ending. Duet.

I have read a few books by Jay Crownover in the past but this was the first book that I have read from Rebecca Yarros and I will be reading more from her in the future. I loved the writing style and I was captivated from the beginning and I couldn’t put my kindle down till I had finished this book and I can’t wait to read the last book in the duet. I loved the connection between Langley and lker and I loved that they both came from different worlds but kind of fit together perfectly

Langley needed a date for her evil step-sister's wedding events but she couldn't use just anyone, no she had to find someone that would annoy the piss out her step-sister. So Langley visits an unsavory bar to hire someone and when her first target turns out to be a dud the one that saves her isn't. Iker is trying to take care of his family and when he overhears Langley's offer he takes up her cause. This is a fake dating story that turns into a self-worth and discovery story. I was emotionally connected by the end and I love that the military aspect of the story is handled with care and with accuracy thanks to Rebecca Yarros. I was happy that I received the second book at the same time so I didn't have to wait to find out what happened with Iker and Langley.
This specific video review will be included in the October 2019 wrap-up.

❐ Fake Date/Sort of Insta-Love
I feel like this was split up into two books just so they could call one of the books Girl in Luv and the other Boy in Luv because it was cute.
For me, it was cute, bringing into play the fake date trope, just not enough cute to warrant two books.
I enjoyed the first book a little more since it had more story and less sex. Essentially, I believe this would have been better as one book and at least two fewer sex scenes.
