good LORD!!! that was a tough read. utterly disturbing. switched it up for a second and tackled an unreliable MALE narrator, and he threw me for a loop that’s for sure. i’ve heard mixed reviews of this book, but i for one really enjoyed it. such a great example of “you never know what you would do in a situation until you find yourself there.” i found myself biting my nails, trying to figure out what i would do if i were at the dinner table myself !!

I really don’t know what I think about this rating wise. It could be a 2?? It could be a 3.5?? Idk. The characters are horrible people but that’s what makes it interesting? So much nothing happens. But in the little details there’s so much to unpack.

I definitely think this would make a good bookclub book. You could sit and pick this apart for hours.

Don’t get your hopes up that the reveal will be mind blowing. It’s definitely dark and it’s wild. But I wouldn’t call it the most shocking thing ever.

Um, whoa. I finished the book thirty minutes ago, and I'm still feeling queasy. I was told that it was hailed as the European Gone Girl, so I thought I'd give it a try. I can definitely understand how they made the correlation, but it was far enough off that it didn't need to be connected.

How far would parents go to cover up a crime committed by their only son? Well, the answer is pretty far. I don't think you're supposed to enjoy any of the characters, but the main family scares me. Scares me a lot.

Interestingly, I did like how the book was set up. The whole book happens over the course of a dinner at a fancy restaurant, so they have the book split up by meal courses. It almost made it feel like a play, and I enjoyed how it made the book flow.

Still, though. That ending...

Okay I'd say. The opening third really had very little suspense mixed in at all. Then the last bit revolved around family and secrets. All in all it was average. Sometimes I find that translated books lose something in the new language. Perhaps that's what happened here.

I originally liked the layout, following the path of a meal. But then in regards to the story, I felt like the book just got weird

2.5stars. I originally dnf’d This book but I decided to push through and read the entire thing. Many parts were so boring and drab to me. Some parts were intriguing and some parts were just excessive banter between characters about irrelevant things such as random flashbacks about random trips to France that had no relevancy to the plot at all. All the characters were selfish and basically sociopaths. This book frustrated me so much. Even though this book frustrates me.. I get what the author was trying to do. He was trying to show the ugliest of human nature that is realistic to situations that happen to this day with no consequences. This book made me angry and really think about the cruel nature that some humans in this world have. I’m still confused about my feelings on this in terms in rather I absolutely hate it or kinda like it. With all that said, I’ll donate this one because I don’t like to keep books below 3 star ratings. Hopefully someone will like it more than me
