This was a slow book that picked up a bit more speed halfway through. I would have preferred more adventures in the garden than Tom just wandering around. The story did start to pick up around the last 20% when the magic starts to be explained and questioned. However, the gendered roles of this book stopped it from being a timeless classic. Tom is rather selfish, entitled, and bossy. Hatty is passive and pokey. I loved the idea of a magical midnight secret garden, but the book was simply unable to put me under any spell. It managed to make everything that was magical seem flat and pragmatic.

It took a little while for me to get into this story, but then I didn't want to stop (and didn't) until the end. Now I'm full of melancholy. A very engaging story, hard to pull myself out of.

Although slow to get into the second half and overall story were beautiful. It felt very unique and the ending was exactly right and set the tone for the whole book.
Minor: Death of parent, Injury/Injury detail
