This is an amazing book about some of the different ways people around the world look at and think about death. It's at times shocking but always very informative. I love the author's tone and tempo and how she is about to acknowledge her own biases about death when viewing and writing about so many different cultures.
I found this both very interesting and relevant to recent conversations I've had with people. It's definitely made me think about how I react to and interact with our culture's current funeral rituals.
Another incredibly good, unusual, and fascinating book by Caitlin Doughty. If you haven't read her debut Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, you should definitely start there. I feel like having the background information about embalming, cremation, and the wide variety of other treatments for human bodies serves as a perfect primer to be able to fully consider and enjoy reading about the long term care and placement of bodies found in this book.
Caitlin does a fantastic job of keeping things light, respectful, and funny even when talking about very dark and what could be potentially disturbing topics and imagery.
The illustrations in this book were a lovely addition, and a gentle way of helping us imagine what is being described without actually requiring her readers to look at dead bodies - something I really appreciated.
Can't recommend this book enough. After all, we are all going to die, why not learn all you can about one of the few things we all have in common?

Love this book! 10/10!
I don't read a lot of nonfiction, yet this anthology had me hooked!
It explains how death and bodies are taken care of in different ways from all around the world.
It touches on how other cultures tackle their grief.
From mummification to composting and many other things in between.
It's definitely worth the read!

I adore Caitlin’s YouTube channel and have been looking forward to reading this book for a long time. Death practices in other cultures are so fascinating to me, it’s one of the things that got me into anthropology. I highly recommend any of Caitlin Doughty’s work if you want an approachable, humorous, loving look at death and the surrounding industry.
