I loved the pictures and the conciseness of each chapter. These factors really helped keep the pace of the book going. You didn't feel bogged down by fact, after fact, after fact. I remained interested and engaged the whole book. I really have a new outlook on deathcare and how we not only "dispose" of our dead but how we take care of the dead and the families. Great read.

Doughty put years of exploration and research into a beautiful series of death practices around the world. It asks a most important question, "What makes the death practices in the US better than in any other culture?" At the end of this book, my opinion is that the US practices are worse.

I can't exactly rate this. Unlike her other book "smoke gets in your eyes" which I read and loved, this is less of memoir more travel diary. Which includes some amazing stories of the different ways cultures deal with death.

It was definitely fascinating but I felt like I missed that personal connect that she was able to put in her other book, which worked well alongside the information. Well presented, I enjoyed the way the chapters were laid out from country to country.
