A lot of genuinely creepy buildup that does NOT pay off in the end.

A great book about a family's hopeful move to a thrice-spooky luxury apartment building to pass the time of a long and exhausting move back to your mom's. Some really interesting haunting themes and how quickly the building itself and its not so living inhabitants effect their small community of living victims.

Not sure how to feel about this book.
Without giving anything away, I’d say that the eeriness lies in the psychological sphere more than the supernatural, even though the story centers around a haunted house.
Having stated that, the only part that made me uncomfortable or slightly spooked was the light misogyny penetrating all communication between the protagonist.
Not really my cup of horror. But most of it probably due to effect lost in translation.

I feel like this would've been spookier for me if the translation hadn't been so Americanized and self-aware? Like it felt very breezy and phrasing choices often felt too modern for it's 1988 original publishing date.

The slow build through most of the book leads to a third act that is hard to put down. I appreciate horror that happens in broad daylight.

A bit too much unnecessary description but this was probably a choice by the translator.
