Pretty Revenge

Emily Liebert

3.3 AVERAGE

3.5 stars

This is a story of revenge, of two women with a shared past who followed very different paths. Kerrie’s life was not going well when she sees Jordana is on a morning TV show. Kerrie recognizes Jordana as the young woman who Kerrie has come to believe destroyed her life. Jordana is now living in Manhattan. She has a rich husband and she runs a wedding concierge business. Everything seems wonderful for Jordana, but Kerrie just lost her job and her relationship and is struggling to find her own path in life.

Don’t go into this book thinking it’s a thriller with lots of twists. It really is a modern tale of revenge. Kerrie and Jordana alternate telling their stories and with each chapter, we find out a bit more about their lives and their pasts, peeling back the layers to reveal why Kerrie wanted revenge so badly and how the quest for it motivates her so fully.

Pop this one in your beach tote. Perfect for a summer afternoon escape! ❤️❤️

Not my favorite. The ending seemed highly unlikely to me.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me read this fabulous ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Kerrie/Olivia is a trouble soul that has her nana's death weighing on it. In order to get revenge for her trouble and unfortunate pass, she went to seek revenge on her nemesis, Jordan/Jordana. Olivia reinvented herself by moving from Connecticut to New York City in hoping to get a job as Jordana's assistant.

High and powerful Jordana is a successful wedding planner in a loveless marriage. She has already reinvented herself since the age of seventeen when she runaway from an abusive household. Lucky for her, she came across a couple that treated her like their own daughter. From there, she married well and built her career from scratch in hope that one day she would runaway again, but this time from her husband.

This was an easy read but definitely not Emily Liebert best work by any means. She is one of my favorite author. However, this story was shallow. The reason for revenge was very weak. The back story did not have much details of any of the main characters. The ending was weak and full of holes. There was no way Jordana could have kept any type of money after her husband was prosecuted. The FBI would have frozen every single dime of that family as she was still married to John. Olivia plan to destroyed Jordana was never truly thought out. She got lucky that John happened to work for Arthur and that Arthur was crooked. The file she found was pure dumb luck. So in all what was her exact plan for revenge again? I wanted to like this story but it was bad.

This one was tricky for me to rate, because it did hold my attention from the very beginning, and I flew through it, but it also felt sort of...icky? The whole premise is centered around Kerry wanting revenge on someone from her past, so she changed her name and identity to make that happen. She lies to everyone, even people who didn't know her in the past and are innocent in this whole thing, and doesn't care whose life she ruins in the process of seeking revenge, so that was tricky. I was rooting for her in the beginning, but ultimately it felt childish and immature, and like she should have moved on in a healthy way a long time ago.

That all aside, the book read like a Lifetime movie, and I loved that. It was quick and easy to get through. It kept me engrossed the entire time, wanting to know what happened in the past that got us to this point, and then wanting to know how it would all end. The end did feel a little disappointing - like things ended too easily. I expected something more explosive, especially since this is not a book with twists and turns - it's straightforward, and what you see is what you get. Because of that, I expected more drama at the end.

All in all, I rated this one 3.5 stars and rounded up to 4 because I WAS engaged in it the entire time. I'd like to thank Gallery Books for my copy of the novel. It was my pleasure to provide an honest review.

The synopsis of this story seemed like a compelling story, but the execution made for a very simplistic story. Going into the story I thought it was going to be a thriller, but instead it became a battle of morals. In the end it was an interesting commentary on the wealthy, about what you would do to get back at the person who wronged you, and how sometimes the perfect life on the outside is not as perfect as it seems. A decent novel for a quick weekend. I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump so it took me a bit longer, but this would probably be an entertaining plane or cabin read.

It was fun to read but not as exciting as some books.

This book was not for me. I actually stopped reading because I couldn’t finish it. Too superficial.

The storyline was okay, but the ending really lost me. Was hoping for more power to it.

I liked this one, it had an interesting plot and I didn’t expect the events to play out the way they did. Definitely couldn’t predict why she wanted revenge, then I understood.
