4.5 / 5 – Feels good to be back!

I’ve been so busy with school and work, not in a slump, just swamped, but I’m finally sliding back into my reading groove. And wow, what a way to come back. I feel like a breath of fresh air, and honestly, it just has that same energy as the original Percy Jackson books. At this point, the whole series feels like one big, continuous story (plot holes and all). And considering how long Uncle Rick has been writing in this world, I can’t even be mad about it.

I actually started The Chalice of the Gods first, then realized how closely Trials of Apollo connects to the main storyline, so I hit pause and came back to this. Best decision. Apollo is hilarious. He’s so godly and so tragically out of touch with reality, and it works every time. Percy, meanwhile, is fully in his “I’m too old for this, good luck” era, which I love. And Leo—my fave—is BACK. I even forgot everyone else thought he was still missing after the last book, which made his reappearance even better.

Next up, we’re clearly heading toward some Roman reunion content, and I cannot wait. This book just hit all the right notes, and now I’m hyped to keep going until I finally get to The Chalice of the Gods

I love this book. I have no words to adequately explain how much I love this book, but I'm going to try. I think this is the best Rick Riordan book I've read so far.

Apollo is such a lovable and kickable hero. He's conceited, arrogant, frustratingly self-absorbed. But he's also broken and lost. He has a terrible relationship with his father, something which is clear from the very beginning and only becomes more apparent as the novel progresses. And he also hasn't been a great dad to his own children.

There's something about him that makes me want to punch him and then give him a hug.

He learns a lot in this book, about family and friends, about love and betrayal and loss. And I couldn't help feeling for him and really wanting him to be ok in the end despite all of his faults.

This was both the most funny and heartbreaking book in the Percy Jackson universe that I've read so far. I wasn't expecting it to hit this hard. The first half of the book was so light, even when bad things were happening. And then here I was, trying to hold the pieces of my broken heart together.

It's not exactly news that the gods are abusive and terrible. Their behaviour is what causes so many of the problems for the demigods. What really stood out in this novel is that Apollo was a god, so he's part of the problem. But he also suffers because of Zeus, his father, and the way he's been treated. He has to come to terms with that and you really see him figuring a lot of this out. This book was a study in trauma if ever there was one.

Not sure how I'll survive this series honestly, it's so perfect.

And now for some quotes, both the hilarious and the heartbreaking.

Clearly that was not true. She looked as if she'd just gone through Hades's haunted house. (Pro tip: DO NOT.) Her face was pallid. She had bit her lip so hard, her teeth were pink with blood. I also detected the faint smell of urine, meaning one of us had gotten scared enough to lose bladder control, and I was seventy-five percent sure it wasn't me.

But then he has to go and break my heart with this.
How cruel to see them--the flowers that I had created to honor my fallen love, with their plumes stained red like his blood or hued violet like his eyes. They bloomed so cheerfully in the window, reminding me of the joy I had lost.
I can't.

This was more fun than I thought it would be! Apollo turning mortal and going on new adventures with demigod characters at camp half-blood makes for a fun story. I also enjoyed the music and poetry use throughout the book. Apollo’s character development is also really interesting and rich—I’ll probably finish the series just to see how that arc goes. Meg is an excellent character as well. Rick Riordan, as usual, is good at taking heavy topics and scenarios and integrating them into his stories without making it too heavy or treating it too lightly. Great mix of humor and difficult realities.

A good setup for the next part of the series. Loved the drama and the cameos, but definitely as much of a whiplash of new characters as the lost hero.

4.5/5

Reread 9/19 - Ah I love this story so much.

Apollo was a hilarious narrator.
Can't wait to listen to/ read the next one!
